Open innovation cluster for the transition to a biobased economy.
Project in the frame of the call Entrepreneurship – New factory of the Future

Coordinator: Ghent Bio-Economy Valley
Partners:  FlandersBio, essenscia vlaanderen, Bio Base Europe Pilot Plant
Timing: May 1st 2013 - April 30th 2016
Total budget: 602.910 EUR

BIOCLUSTER aims at promoting the transition of the Flemish industry to a more sustainable biobased economy. The main target groups are companies from the agro-industry, technology developers and the chemical sector. A central theme in the project is the development of new economic value chains around the 5 main product groups of the biobased economy: bioplastics, biosurfactants, biomaterials, biosolvents and biolubricants. Companies from different sectors will be brought together in thematic workshops with the aim to find new value-chains that can be implemented in a relatively short term, and that create a win-win for the participating parties.

Together with thematic workshops, an open innovation campus for the biobased economy will be developed. This will be done by setting up strategic partnerships with knowledge centers and technology providers at home and abroad. The open innovation campus will function as a catalyst for the development of these new biobased value chains and will provide quick plug & play solutions to companies.

The project is supported by different dissemination actions to promote the biobased economy, and the non-confidential results of the project will be used as showcases to motivate other companies to go biobased as well.

All events and results of the project will be disseminated through the CINBIOS network.
