The City of Ghent occupies a central position within Flanders, in the middle of the economic core area of the European Union. It is situated at the cross-roads of strongly performing economic areas such as the Randstad Holland, the Ruhr area, London, Paris and Lille-Roubaix-Tourcoing.
The Port of Ghent boasts a state-of-the-art harbour infrastructure. Because of the strong presence of Ghent University and various other institutions for higher education, Ghent presents itself as an important centre of knowledge and innovation.
Particularly the development of biotechnology in Ghent is trend-setting at the international level. Based on these assets, important industrial activities are continuously being developed with a clear goal of attracting high-tech activities. In the years to come, the City of Ghent will provide a lot of space for knowledge-based activities such as biotechnology. Particular attention is being attributed to the development of science parks, for which 22 ha out of a total of 100 ha have already been developed. Whereas there is still room available for new biotech companies in the bio-incubator of the science park, a new science park Rijvissche will be developed in the near future. Furthermore, the city is planning the development of a number of locations where offices can be rented for business development, e.g. The Loop, St.-Pieters-Aaigem, Eiland Zwijnaarde and the Artevelde Soccer Stadium.
